ART 2200:
Advanced InDesign
Students will develop advanced skills needed to create electronic page layout files ready for print and digitally output designs. It is recommended students complete ART 1120, ART 1230, ART 1280 and ART 2412 prior to taking this course.
Project: Map Fold Design
The objective of the Map Fold Design project was to create a foldable poster with a custom dieline to show how it folds. The poster itself needed to be informational and comprehensive, designed to showcase an era of graphic design. While many eras were presented as options, we were still free to pick our own even if it was not listed. I chose to focus on the Art Deco movement, showcasing classic designs such as geometric shapes, Art Deco inspired typefaces, and color palettes containing gold and black.

Project: Digital Design
The objective of the Digital Design project was to create a travel guide of a National Park themed after an app or website page. It had to be interactive with multiple pages a person can click through for more information. I chose to do Great Smoky Mountain National Park and focused on a color palate of yellows, greens, blues, and beige to really sell the rocky forest outdoor theme.
Project: Multi-Chapter Book
The objective of the Multi-Chapter Book was to showcase what we have learned in Advanced InDesign this year by formatting a book containing at least 10 chapters, a front cover, a back cover, a title page, and a table of contents. The type for the book was obtained through The Gutenberg Project, a website with an archive of countless digital books. I personally chose “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.”

Skills Practice: Create a Varnish Plate
The objective of the varnish plate skills practice was to design a bookmark with a background, diecut hole, and decorative spot varnish coating. The main practice this assignment provided was beginning with dieline cuts and how to mark spot varnishes. I chose an image my mom took of the mountains during a drive to see the fall colors in the trees for my background. For the spot varnish I created a maple leaf in multiple sizes and spread them out across the whole bookmark.

Skills Practice: Design Automation Demo
The objective of the design automation demo skills practice was to practice layout and design while also creating an informational poster others could benefit from. At the same time, researching automation was another way for us to take learning into our own hands. I chose to create a poster based around keyboard shortcuts that edit the appearance of text.

Skills Practice: Variable Data
The objective of the variable data skills practice was to practice the use of spreadsheets and variable data in InDesign. We learned how to export spreadsheets correctly so InDesign would be able to read them, how to import them to InDesign, and how to use InDesign’s variable data ability to change certain words or names. The design for the assignment itself was to create and decorate a name card then use variable data for the names.
