Newspaper Ad

The objective of this assignment was to create a black and white newspaper ad for a travel company named Tandell. The theme had to be somewhere to travel in Utah, and had to include original artwork or images, a custom tagline, custom headings, and a unique layout. The ad itself measures at 15 7/8 by 9 1/8 with a 1/4 inch white border all around.

Final Design

Research

The research began with me looking at inspiration for different types of ads, as well as graphics and fonts. From the beginning of the assignment I knew I wanted to focus my design around mining or abandoned towns in Utah, so my research for graphics and fonts revolve around that topic

Brainstorming

I had to come up with a catchy line to grab the attention of the viewer, so I wrote down as many as I could think of and used the longest one for a font study. More research and lists of towns were created for the information that had to go on the ad.

Sketches & Doodles

Thumbnails

I ended up not second guessing my three thumbnails and thinking they could be better, so I took some time to sketch out some mining related doodles before coming up with two new thumbnails. I ended up combining elements of both of them for the final design.

Intermediate Drafts

When I created my intermediates I got ideas from all of the thumbnails I had done and combined some of them. After the art was done I made a scan before adding text both in case I messed up and so I would have an art-only version of each intermediate.

Final Hand Draft

I ultimately decided to go with the second draft and revised it in a final design. The biggest changes I made were to the shovel and minecart. I also already knew I was going to use an illustrated font for the main heading but couldn't fully illustrate it in the final hand draft.

B&W Progressions

After the ad was completely done on the computer, I printed it out to see if any mistakes could be spotted or any changes needed to be made. The biggest issues were with margins, I completely forgot to add the logo, and the document was not grayscale. I ended up printing it twice before decided it didn't need any more changes.

Critique Changes

Following a critique, I shifted around some of the text to be consistent, changed the address to be more readable, and added icons for each town title. The icons were taken from the other intermediate drawing.
